A Thriving Local Economy

Pacific Grove’s local economy gives our city its character. Our independent businesses, entrepreneurs, artists, and professionals make PG distinctive.

The way people work is also changing. Remote work is more common, artificial intelligence is reshaping many professions, and more people are building businesses outside traditional employment.

I’d like Pacific Grove to think more intentionally about how we support local businesses while creating opportunities for the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Doing More Business Locally

Pacific Grove has tremendous professional talent, yet city contracts for services frequently go to firms outside the city. Competitive procurement is essential, and the city should always seek strong value for taxpayers.

At the same time, I think it's worth examining whether PG should expand its existing local and small-business preference beyond public works so qualified local firms have a better opportunity to compete for city business.

That would keep more economic activity within our community while giving the city greater access to people who know Pacific Grove well.

Helping People Build Businesses

I’d also like to create more opportunities for young people and early-career professionals to learn how to start and run a business, whether as a full-time venture or a source of supplemental income.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape our regional economy, the ability to recognize a market opportunity, understand customers, secure financing, and build a sustainable business will become increasingly valuable.

The city could help connect aspiring entrepreneurs with local business owners and regional organizations that already provide training, mentorship, and technical assistance.

Creating a Co-Working Space

Remote work has also become a larger part of life in Pacific Grove. Yet people working from home do not always have a place to meet colleagues, collaborate with others, or simply work alongside other professionals.

I’d like to explore establishing a co-working space in PG. It could be privately developed or created through a partnership, with the city helping bring interested organizations together.

A well-located space could strengthen the professional community while generating additional activity for nearby restaurants, coffee shops, and other local businesses.

Growing the Economy We Have

Pacific Grove does not need to become something different to strengthen its economy.

We can build on the talent already here, make it easier for local businesses to succeed, and create new pathways for residents to participate in a changing economy.
